Vision Concern Center

Just as our bodies are influenced by age and environment, so too are our eyes. While we cannot do much about aging, we can support the biochemical mechanisms that protect our ocular tissues. Science has demonstrated that proper nutrition and supplementation can slow these negative effects.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50. The macula is the central area of the retina responsible for our detail vision, including 20/20 eyesight, color vision, depth perception, etc. During your eye health evaluation, the doctor can determine if you have signs of macular degeneration.

Risk Factors for Macular Degeneration include:

  • Age
  • Northern European Ancestry
  • Obesity
  • Alcoholism
  • Ultraviolet

What Are Macular Pigments?

Macular pigments, lutein and zeaxanthin, are carotenoids. They act as a natural barrier to keep the retina safe by absorbing ultraviolet and blue light. The pigments also act to reduce chromatic aberration and glare, and improve visual performance at low light.

As we age, the macula loses the pigments lutein and zeaxanthin, increasing our risk for macular degeneration. Research has shown that macular degeneration is nutrient responsive, so with ingestion of these nutrients, one can re-populate the macular pigments, resulting in improved visual functioning.

Foods

Foods that contain high amounts of lutein are:

  • Spinach
  • Zucchini
  • Squash
  • Kiwi
  • Red grapes
  • Pumpkin
  • Other colorful fruits and vegetables
  • Orange pepper,
  • Egg yolks
  • Chinese goji berries

For people who are at risk for macular degeneration, 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin per day is recommended. For those with macular degeneration, the recommended amounts are 20mg and 4mg per day. Because these amounts are more than most of us would consume in a typical diet, supplementation is recommended.

Dr. Yorkgitis and Grieneisen have researched several brands of supplements and have decided to recommend Maxivision products. Maxivision Whole Body Formula is a comprehensive multivitamin, including lutein and zeaxanthin. Maxivision Lutein Formula contains only lutein and zeaxanthin and may be used in conjunction with other supplements.
